Saint John

Local Information
Saint John is a city of firsts: it is Canada’s first incorporated city (1785) and home to Canada’s first common-law market (1785), to its first chartered bank (1820), and, of course, to its first incorporated free public library (1883). You can read about more firsts on the city’s tourism site, and find additional information about Saint John on the city’s Wikipedia page.

Saint John turns 225 this year. To commemorate its birthday, the city has been designated a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2010 by Canadian Heritage. It earned this distinction thanks to the efforts of a volunteer committee, which has a year-long series of events and projects planned. Visit See Saint John magazine for even more ideas on how to celebrate 225 years during your stay.
One of Saint John’s unmistakable highlights is its City Market, located in the heart of the uptown area. Open Monday to Saturday, the Saint John City Market offers traditional farmers’ market fare like quality produce and homemade delicacies, as well as imported goods and handmade crafts from local artisans. The City Market houses and is close to several restaurants, featuring all manner of North American and international cuisine. Visit the Saint John City Market’s website, view the A Day in the Life of the City Market slideshow (requires Windows Media Player), and check out the Market on Twitter.
